US, Canada, Mexico to host 2026 World Cup

MOSCOW (AP) — North America will host the 2026 World Cup after FIFA voters overwhelmingly opted for the financial and logistical certainty of a United States-led bid over a risky Moroccan proposal for the first 48-team tournament.

The soccer showpiece will return to the U.S. for the first time since 1994 after gaining 134 votes, while Morocco got 65 at the FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday.

The vote by football federations was public, in contrast to secrecy surrounding the ballot by FIFA’s elected board members for the 2018 and 2022 hosts, Russia and Qatar, in 2010.

The U.S. proposed staging 60 out of the 80 games in 2026, when 16 teams will be added to the finals, leaving Canada and Mexico with ten fixtures each.

The U.S. is set to host all games from the quarterfinals onward.

An optimistic promise of delivering $14 billion in revenue helped sway voters, along with the lack of major construction work required on the 16 planned stadiums, all of which already exist.

By contrast, Morocco appeared too hazardous as a potential host when all 14 venues had to be built or renovated as part of a $16 billion investment in new infrastructure. The vote leaves Morocco reeling from a fifth failure in a World Cup hosting vote, with the continent’s sole tournament coming in 2010 in South Africa.

While Morocco’s combined tickets and hospitality revenue would be $1.07 billion, according to FIFA analysis, North America would generate $2 billion additional income.

Canada will host men’s World Cup matches for the first time, while Mexico gets its first taste of the event since staging the entire event in 1986.

The 87,000-capacity MetLife Stadium outside New York is proposed for the final. It’s just miles from where federal prosecutors spearheaded an ongoing investigation into FIFA corruption. More than 40 soccer officials and businesses indicted, convicted or pleaded guilty.

The bribery scandal put the governing body on the brink, FIFA President Gianni Infantino told the congress ahead of Wednesday’s vote.

“FIFA was clinically dead as an organization,” Infantino said, reflecting on his election in 2016. “Two years later, FIFA is alive and well, full of joy and passion and with a vision for its future.”

The North American victory suggests football officials are ready to gather for a World Cup in a country whose government has demonstrated its willingness to jail corrupt sports leaders through undercover investigations.

The North America bid also had to overcome concerns about the impact of policies from the Trump administration, including attempts to implement a ban on travel by residents of six majority-Muslim countries.

The main intervention by President Donald Trump was a warning in a White House news conference, discussing the FIFA vote, that he would be “watching very closely.” It was a veiled threat to withhold U.S. support from countries opposing the bid.

FIFA now has the final say on which cities are selected to host games and whether all three countries are guaranteed a place at the tournament. Victor Montagliani, the Canadian who leads CONCACAF, wants them to take three of the six qualification slots reserved for the region.

There is also a chance to send a seventh team via an inter-continental playoff. North America will host the six-team playoff tournament in November 2025 to decide the last two places in the 48-team lineup.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie wins 2018 PEN Pinter prize

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie wins 2018 PEN Pinter prize

Acclaimed Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been awarded the 2018 PEN Pinter prize.

The PEN Pinter prize is intended to honour a writer of “outstanding literary merit” who – in the words of Pinter’s speech on winning the Nobel prize in 2005 – casts an “unflinching, unswerving” gaze upon the world and shows a “fierce intellectual determination … to define the real truth of our lives and our societies”.

Over the last decade, it has been won by writers including Margaret Atwood, Salman Rushdie and Tom Stoppard.

“I admired Harold Pinter’s talent, his courage, his lucid dedication to telling his truth, and I am honoured to be given an award in his name,” said Adichie.

Judges for the award praised Adichie’s “refusal to be deterred or detained by the categories of others”.

“In this age of the privatised, marketised self, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is the exception who defies the rule,” said Maureen Freely, chair of trustees for English PEN. “Sophisticated beyond measure in her understanding of gender, race, and global inequality, she guides us through the revolving doors of identity politics, liberating us all.”

Freely was joined on the judging panel by the writers Philippe Sands, Alex Clark and Inua Ellams, as well as Fraser.

Adichie will be awarded the prize on 9 October, when she will also announce her co-winner, the 2018 International Writer of Courage.

Adichie will choose an author “who is active in defence of freedom of expression, often at great risk to their own safety and liberty”.

The award-winning novelist was hailed by Harold Pinter’s widow, the biographer Antonia Fraser, as a writer who embodies “those qualities of courage and outspokenness which Harold much admired”.

Dangote Donates 150 Patrol Vehicles To The Nigerian Police

The efforts of the police to provide security received a boost yesterday when renowned businessman, Aliko Dangote, donated 150 operational vehicles to the Nigerian Police Force.
The donation is the largest single donation by any organisation in the country to the police. Dangote, while presenting the vehicles in Abuja, said the gesture was part of his foundation’s commitment to boost the security architecture of the country.

He explained that more vehicles would be donated in the second phase of the donation and assured that other security agencies would be considered in due course. “The Dangote Foundation spends between N10 and N12 billion annually to sectors where we always intervene,” he said.

The business mogul stated that Dangote Foundation would continue to provide logistics support to the police to enhance their operations, thereby guaranteeing the security of lives and property of citizens. He added that the vehicles were assembled in Nigeria.

“We started by donating 150 vehicles to the police, we have also built a security post for them in Kwara State and we will continue to do more to complement the efforts of the Federal Government in terms of securing life and property.”

He appealed to the police to maintain the vehicles. “We want to ensure that they don’t drive them recklessly, we want to make sure they maintain them. Once we see what happens in the next six months, we will also look at how best we can assist them in other areas.”

In his address, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, said Dangote has assisted the Federal Government in many areas. Osinbajo, who stated that Dangote was not just interested in making profit alone, said his firm is also interested in the socio-economic development of the country.

He said the vehicles would help to boost the efforts of the government in ensuring security in every parts of the country.

In his remarks, the Inspector-General of Police, Idris Ibrahim, said the patrol vehicles would assist the police in the realisation and fulfillment of its constitutional mandate of protection of lives and property.

Latest mom to be, Linda Ikeji showing off her baby-bump to shut critics up

(How to hide a baby bump 101. Suck belle in and wear a high waist…lol). So, a few friends have been calling me, asking me how I’m holding up with all the trolling on the internet since I announced my pregnancy. I kind of felt bad for them because they were worrying over something I wasn’t. I’ve been on the internet for nearly 12 years now, I’ve made money, I’ve met amazing people, I’ve written about folks and stepped on toes (mostly of course, unknowingly…lol). So when people troll me, that’s fine. It’s called Karma. Lol. Fortunately it doesn’t get to me. There’s nothing I haven’t been called on the internet, and it will never stop because this is where I plan to do business for the rest of my life! So we all are stuck together. I’m not going anywhere…lol. So let’s address some issues…and the reason why I bother is for the young girls who look up to me. I owe you and will always speak to help you in anyway I can because I want you to shine and be the better version of yourself. So number one, let’s talk about this celibacy issue. I preached it a lot of times but I have NEVER said do not have sex before marriage. Here’s what I have always said to young girls and I maintain it. Never ever give your body to a man for money. You’re worth so much more than that. You’re beautiful beyond measure and there’s absolutely nothing a man can give you that you can’t give urself if you apply yourself, believe in yourself and work hard. Start now that you’re young, pursue your dreams, work hard till your hands are sore and ur mind is tired, never listen to anyone who tells you you’re not good enough or you’re wasting your time, and no matter how hard it gets, no matter how rough the road becomes, never give up on yourself or your dreams. 2. I’ve always also said & I maintain it; do not sleep around because your body is too precious & deserves respect. You deserve love & dignity. I’ve always said sex should only happen when you find yourself in a loving relationship, with someone you love & who loves you back. I was 100% celibate until I was ready to share my life with someone and I met the man of my dreams. (unfortunately, I can’t share him with the internet..lol)
